How to wash reusable sanitary pads?Whether you have already made the swap to reusable sanitary pads or are just considering it, knowing how to wash them is an essential step to ensure they look good and remain effective for as long as possible.
If you are new to the reusable pads’ world, washing your pads can look like a tedious time-consuming activity. Fear not, we are here to show you that this is not the case. This additional step will fit nicely into your routine and will become second nature once you have got the hang of it (and whenever you are lacking the motivation to do it just stop for a second to remember how much you are helping the planet, your body, and your wallet with this simple step)
Before we continue, just a gentle reminder that the following tips and wash instructions are based on the Floco range of reusable pads. Please ensure you follow the manufacturer instructions if you own a different brand.
Just as you would with any piece of intimate clothing, we would recommend you to clean your reusable sanitary pad before your first use following the steps below.
Store while in your cycle
There are different methods of storing your sanitary pads until its time to wash them.
The best method is to ensure you either rinse them immediately after use and store them in a wet bag or alternatively, if practical, soak them in a small bucket in your bathroom until is time to wash them.
Pro tip to avoid stains: Give your reusable sanitary pads a rinse with fresh water (not hot water) before washing them. Contrary to what you might think, hot water will help set blood stains rather than prevent them, therefore is important that this first step is done with cold water.
As a last option, you could fold and store your pads in a wet bag and give them a rinse just before wash time.
Once you are ready to wash your sanitary pads simply throw them in your washing machine on a cold cycle (30 degrees or less) adding your normal detergent. Hold off on the conditioner, this will affect the pad absorbency, so we recommend avoiding it.
You can wash your pads on their own or add them to any of your planned loads, other items of clothing will not get damaged or stained by your pads.
Floco pads are black, and look great in your undies even after multiple uses.
Reusable sanitary pads are best to dry line (sunlight will help keep stains away) or dry on top of a radiator. Do not tumble dry, it upsets them.
Store until next cycle
Once dried, you can store your pads next to your intimate clothing until your next cycle. They do not need to be kept in a special bag, but you can if you want to.
Top Tips to prevent stains.
- Rinse and wash with cold water only, hot water helps set blood stains.
- If practical, allow your pads to get a bit of sunlight while drying. Sunlight will help keep stains away.
- Use a stain remover on the areas where blood might have set just before throwing your pad in the washing machine.
- Buy pads in a dark color to make stains less visible.
Lastly, remember that a stain in your pad does not mean is no longer effective or clean. The odd stain here and there is normal and nothing to be ashamed of. Want to learn more about periods, sustainability or lifestyle tips? Follow us on Instagram.
