Reusable period pads or reusable sanitary pads are gaining more popularity as many of us look to cut down on our waste. But can reusable pads work for a heavy flow?
First up what is considered a heavy flow?
Although it can often look and feel like a period explosion in our undies many of us do not bleed that much. Typically, people who flow will lose anywhere between 5ml and 80ml of blood across their period, with the average person losing 40ml. Anything more than 80ml of blood is regarded as heavy menstrual bleeding or menorrhagia.
But many of us do not bleed into a measuring cylinder (although cup users kind of do!). So what does 80ml actually look like?
The NHS suggests you may have heavy menstrual bleeding if:
- You bleed through your period product every 1 or 2 hours.
- You need to use 2 period products to cope with your period.
- Your period lasts for longer than 7 days
- Your blood clots are larger than a 10p coin (2.5 cm)
- You have to avoid regular daily activities because of your period
- You feel tired or out of breath regularly
Many people live with heavy periods. Treatment is available is your life is impacted by heavy periods. You can find out more here.
Do reusable period pads work for people with heavy flows?
The short answer is yes, absolutely!
Reusable period pads tend to absorb more than disposable pads due to the incredible moisture wicking materials used. A Floco pad absorbs 16ml of liquid, the same as a 2 disposable pads.
Reusable period pads or reusable pantyliners can also be a great way of backing up other products or for those what if days.
However, whatever period product you use is complete personal choice. Everyone who flows is unique, and so is their period. For some, reusable period pads will work great and for others it might not be for them. Use what works for YOU.
